Reaching out to GBV&F victims in Groot Marico

The scourge of Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBV&F) was met with an intensive awareness campaign in the community of Groot Marico in the Ramotshere Moilwa Local Municipality. The Department of Community Safety and Transport Management with stakeholders under the banner of crime prevention has made it an agenda to go out in various communities in the province to raise awareness on GBV&F and affiliated dangers thereof.

The Groot Marico policing precinct has identified a trend where cases of GBV&F against perpetrators are often discontinued by victims. This is something that remains a concern as victims might be influenced to do so against their will and the abuse tends to continue.

“GBV&F includes everyone, whether male or female. However, statistics indicate that women are more likely to report cases whereas men tend to be more hesitant out of fear of stigma.

“We therefore encourage victims to report violation, intimidation or any kind of abuse regardless of their gender. We also urge the police to deal with those cases decisively and with the required urgency,” said Moleti Gaboutloeloe who is the Crime Prevention Area Manager for Ramotshere Moiloa under Provincial Secretariat Chief Directorate.

The community was urged to activate sub forums where people can participate in activities to combat crime. This will create a more sustainable approach to crime prevention.

“We believe that in many instances, there is a need for spiritual well being. We preach the word of God and also have social workers who deal with other scopes of our work.

“We encourage a fellowship in communities, where they live harmoniously with one another and form support groups in order to voice out their issues regarding crime,” said Chaplain Yvonne Matlakale from Medical and Community Chaplains (MCC).

Other stakeholders who formed part of the initiative are Home Affairs, The Department of Human Settlements, Groot Marico Police Station, Ramotshere Molioa Local Municipality, South African Ex- Prisoners Against Crime (SAEPAC) and South African Social Security Agency (SASSA)..
